Environmental Initiatives

KIOXIA Iwate Corporation engages in environmental conservation efforts as a local company.
We promote reductions in energy usage and environment-related events with local communities throughout the company.
For details, see the Environmental Report.

Environmental Measurements

Environmental Measurements

We established our own strict management standards for the likes of air, groundwater, waste water, odious substances, noise, and vibrations according to laws and regulations, and take measurements to monitor their status.
We have set up an internal analysis center and established a system in which we can carry out analysis work swiftly.

In addition, to check the changes in the surrounding environment caused by running the plant, we conducted a survey of the water quality, air quality, and wildlife before and after we opened the plant. In the results of the surveys before and after the Manufacturing Building No.1 was up and running, we observed no changes to the surrounding environment.

Countermeasures against Environmental Risks

Environmental Facilities

Environmental facilities such as waste water and emission processing facilities are installed based on our own structural guidelines. For our structural guidelines, we established standards for preventing pollution and reducing risks stemming from chemical substances.

Ties with the Community through Environmental Conservation

Cleaning the area around the plant

As company events to deepen our employees’ understanding of environmental conservation, we held monthly events to enhance our environmental efforts (June: Environment Month, October: 3R Promotion Month, February: Energy Saving Month). As one of our initiatives, we clean the area around the plant, with many employees involved in this clean-up endeavor. We have a sense of ownership regarding the use of transportation and increasing the number of people who walk at the Kitakogyodanchi industrial estate, and strive to take the initiative in cleaning up the surrounding area.

Project to protect cherry blossom trees

In Kitakami City, we are engaged in a project to protect cherry blossom trees to ensure the fantastic cherry blossoms of Tenshochi Park, a popular viewing spot, are around for the next 100 years.
We have participated in the Cherry Blossom Protection Workshop of this project since 2021, helping with the work to provide fertilizer to the young cherry blossom trees in Tenshochi Park.

Selection of eco-friendly materials

In the manufacturing of semiconductors, the amount of waste has gradually increased as we have increased the scale of production.
To reduce the impact of waste on the environment, we promote efforts to reduce waste and recycle. For example, we use resources efficiently by distilling and extracting the useful components in waste water at our water processing facilities before recycling.

Reducing Energy-Derived CO2

As large amounts of energy are used in the semiconductor manufacturing process, this causes an increase in CO2 emissions.
We set up an Energy Conservation Committee throughout KIOXIA Iwate to promote CO2 reduction measures by way of efficient operation of manufacturing equipment and its associated equipment. We also use renewable energy generated with our solar power generation system. Engaging in these efforts to reduce CO2 helps to curb climate change.

Reducing Greenhouse Gases (PFCs)

In manufacturing semiconductors, to prevent the direct emission of gases (PFCs*) that cause global warming, we install systems, which remove greenhouse gases, to all of our equipment that emits these gases. We are engaged in reducing our emissions of PFCs by installing this system for all the equipment that we introduce.

*PFCs (Perfluorocarbons): A gas compound of fluorine and carbon that has a major impact on global warming.

Reducing Chemical Substance Emissions

We check the impact chemical substances, which are restricted by various different laws, have on the environment, etc., and actively reduce and replace the substances that have a negative impact.
Volatile organic compounds (VOC), which cannot be substituted, leave an offensive odor on the human body, and so cannot be emitted as they are. We reduce our emissions by installing gas removal systems for all relevant equipment.

*VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds): A general term for carbon compounds that are emitted into the air.
